A simple and healthy recipe for steamed sweet potatoes that preserves their natural sweetness and fluffiness. This method keeps the skin intact for added nutrients and flavor, making it a perfect side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 to 4 sweet potatoes (about 812 oz each)
  • Salt and seasonings to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash sweet potatoes: Wash the potatoes under cool running water and scrub the skins thoroughly to remove all dirt and soil. Leave the skins on to preserve taste and create a fluffier inside.
  2. Add water to your pot: Pour about 1 to 2 inches of water into a pot, then place a steamer basket inside. If you don’t have a steamer basket, use a metal strainer, colander, or sieve that fits inside the pot without touching the water.
  3. Add sweet potatoes to steamer: Place the whole sweet potatoes in the steamer basket or metal strainer, spreading them out evenly for uniform cooking.
  4. Steam sweet potatoes: Cover the pot with a lid and bring the water to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and steam the sweet potatoes for 25 to 30 minutes.
  5. Check for doneness: Test the sweet potatoes by inserting a fork or skewer. They are done when the fork slides in easily without resistance.
  6. Let cool: Remove the sweet potatoes from the pot and let them cool on a plate for about 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy with your favorite toppings or seasonings.

Notes

  • Keep the skin on to retain nutrients and add texture.
  • Adjust steaming time based on the size of the sweet potatoes.
  • You can use this method for a quick, healthy snack or a side dish.
  • Season with salt, butter, cinnamon, or herbs as desired once steamed.
