Ingredients

Scale

Dough and Filling

  • 3 tubes (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent roll sheets
  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 3 cups (339 g) mild cheddar cheese, shredded, divided

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare muffin tin: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Roll out dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out each tube of crescent roll dough to a 12×16-inch rectangle. If using perforated dough, pinch seams to seal.
  3. Make garlic butter for filling: In a medium bowl, combine ½ cup softened butter, 1 tablespoon chopped chives, and 1 tablespoon minced garlic. Mix well.
  4. Spread butter and cheese: Spread about one-third of the garlic butter mixture evenly over one sheet of dough. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the buttered dough.
  5. Roll dough into logs: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log shape.
  6. Cut logs: Cut each log in half, then cut each half into two lengthwise, resulting in 4 sections per sheet.
  7. Repeat with remaining dough: Repeat the butter spreading, cheese sprinkling, rolling, and cutting with the remaining two sheets of dough, ending with 12 sections total.
  8. Form cruffins: Take each section with layered sides facing out and roll tightly into a cinnamon-roll shape, tucking the end piece underneath.
  9. Place in muffin tin: Arrange each rolled cruffin into the prepared muffin tin cups.
  10. Bake: Bake the cruffins for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  11. Prepare garlic butter topping: While baking, whisk together 3 tablespoons melted butter, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 1 teaspoon chopped chives, and 1 teaspoon kosher salt in a small bowl.
  12. Brush warm cruffins: Once baked, remove cruffins from oven and generously brush the prepared garlic butter topping over each warm cruffin.
  13. Serve warm: Allow to cool slightly, then serve warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Be sure to seal the perforated dough seams tightly to prevent butter and cheese leakage during baking.
  • The garlic butter for filling and finishing can be adjusted to taste depending on your preference for garlic intensity.
  • These cruffins are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in an oven to restore flakiness.
  • Feel free to substitute cheddar with your favorite cheese such as mozzarella or pepper jack for a different flavor profile.
  • Use fresh chives when possible for the best aromatic flavor.
