Dragon Chicken is a popular Indo-Chinese dish featuring crispy fried chicken strips coated in a flavorful, spicy sauce with hints of sweetness. This recipe combines tender chicken strips with a bold sauce that’s perfect for serving as an appetizer or main dish.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 500g boneless chicken breast, cut into thin strips
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Oil for deep frying

For the Sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 23 dried red chilies, broken into pieces
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 small capsicum (bell pepper), sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped spring onions (for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Marinate the chicken strips with soy sauce, salt, and black pepper. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Batter: Mix all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and egg. Coat the marinated chicken well.
  3. Fry the Chicken: Fry the coated chicken strips until golden brown and crispy. Drain and set aside.
  4. Make the Sauce: Heat oil, sauté ginger-garlic paste, dried red chilies, onion, and bell pepper. Add soy sauce, chili sauce, ketchup, honey, black pepper, and red chili powder. Thicken with cornstarch slurry.
  5. Coat the Chicken: Toss fried chicken strips in the sauce.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle spring onions and sesame seeds over the top. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Adjust the spice levels to suit your taste preferences.
  • For a healthier option, you can bake the chicken strips instead of frying them.
  • Feel free to add more vegetables like mushrooms or baby corn for extra flavor and texture.
