Discover the perfect recipe for creamy homemade mashed potatoes using simple ingredients like potatoes, butter, milk, and optional seasonings. These mashed potatoes are smooth, flavorful, and easy to make, ideal as a comforting side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2 pounds Potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 1 tsp Salt (for boiling)

Dairy & Seasoning

  • ½ cup Butter
  • ½ cup Milk or Cream
  • ½ tsp Optional: Black pepper, garlic, herbs (like thyme or rosemary) for seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Peel the potatoes if desired, or wash them thoroughly if leaving skins on. Cut them into evenly sized chunks to ensure uniform cooking.
  2. Boil the Potatoes: Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  3. Drain and Dry: Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return them to the pot and heat on high for about 30 seconds to evaporate excess moisture.
  4. Mash with Butter: Transfer the hot potatoes to a large mixing bowl. Add ½ cup butter and mash the potatoes using a potato masher or fork until butter is fully incorporated and potatoes reach your preferred texture.
  5. Add Warm Milk: Warm ½ cup of milk or cream in a small saucepan or microwave. Gradually add the warm milk to the mashed potatoes while continuing to mash until the desired creaminess is achieved. Take care not to add too much liquid to avoid runny potatoes.
  6. Season to Taste: Taste and season with additional salt, black pepper, and optional garlic or herbs as preferred. Mix well.
  7. Serve Warm: Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl. Optionally, garnish with a small pat of butter on top. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Leaving the potato skins on is optional; ensure skins are well washed if leaving on.
  • Using warm milk or cream helps keep potatoes hot and smooth.
  • Adjust the amount of butter and milk based on desired richness and creaminess.
  • For added flavor, incorporate roasted garlic or fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme.
  • Russet potatoes yield fluffier mashed potatoes while Yukon Gold provide creamier texture.
