Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon salt

Additional Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup whole milk, or buttermilk (or ½ cup of each)
  • milk, buttermilk, cream or melted butter, optional, for brushing on biscuit tops

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Butter: Place butter in the freezer for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 425° F with a rack in the upper third of the oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.
  4. Add Butter: Grate the frozen butter using a box grater. Add the butter to the bowl and mix it into the dry ingredients using a fork.
  5. Combine Wet Ingredients: Pour the milk or buttermilk into the bowl and stir until the dough comes together. Add more milk if needed.
  6. Shape the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface, pat into a rectangle, fold, and repeat. Cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter.
  7. Bake: Brush the biscuit tops with optional ingredients and bake for 13 to 16 minutes until golden brown.
